lower house bed and breakfast

Alastair Sawday

Q - Which is the best B&B in the UK for a relaxing break?
The Times Saturday January 23 2010

Alastair Sawday replies: Lower House, near Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh borders, gets my vote because of the sense of exhilaration that I felt when I arrived and settled in there. It is exuberantly "all over the place". The stone house is full of unexpected twists and flourishes: panelling, creaking stairs, timber cladding, generous spaces for reading or playing the piano.

I slept in the attic among the beams, picking my way over them to get around. From the window, I looked over treetops, as if in an equatorial jungle, the mist lifting gently in the early morning. The breakfasts at Lower House are wonderful, made from local, organic food, and Nicky and Peter are easygoing, unpretentious hosts. Outside, there is a garden of rare beauty in which the house appears more modest than it is. Lower House (01497 820773, lowerhousegardenhay.co.uk). Doubles from 80 per room, per night.
